Mary-'Gusta has been a favorite book of mine for years and years. I first read is many years ago and felt bad when I had to throw the book away because the last few pages were missing. I was glad to read it again. I wanted to re-read it to see if it was a book appropriate for my grand-daughter (she is only 8 but a prolific reader) Decided it may be a few years before I'd want her to read it. She reads way above her level so it is not easy to find appropriate books for her to read.
Being a native New Englander, I especially enjoy these books by Joseph Crosby Lincoln. The characters are interesting and the humor is great.
A light read, but well presented. Enjoyable.
Sweet and old-fashioned. Mary-Gusta is a girl with intelligence and backbone. I like her.

This is the second book of his I have read. I only read at night to get myself to sleep and found myself making excuses to my husband about turning in early. My favorite is still Galusha the Magnificent. Mary was a definite 2nd place.
I borrowed this book from my dear aunt while I was visiting a few months ago. I absolutely loved it! It is such a timeless classic. Placed picturesquely in the early 1900 New England area. About a little girl (Mary Agusta Lathrop--called Mary-'Gusta) who is left an orphan after her stepfather dies. Two of her stepfather's old sea faring business partners are left to take care of her.
